电影有两条主线并行推进。 第一条主线讲述的是德维（瑞恰·查达饰）的故事，她与一个小伙子开房遭遇警察“扫黄”，小伙子自杀身亡，父亲帕塔克（桑杰·米什拉饰）成了腐败警官的勒索对象，德维不得不背井离乡。 第二条主线讲述的是迪帕克（维基·科萨尔饰）的故事，他家是从事火葬行业的低种姓世家，但却同高种姓女生沙露（斯薇塔·特瑞帕蒂饰）深深地相爱了，但一场意外又将命运多舛的他推向了深渊。 最后两条主线交会在恒河岸边。社会的矛盾、生活的无奈就这样如长卷般徐徐展开，平淡似水，又感人至深。
