人間と文明が滅びかかっている遠い未来の地球で、くるみ、サキ、カリンカ、エクセリアの4人の人間の少女が共同生活をしていた。ある日くるみは道人という少年と恋に落ちる。そしてメールのやり取りなどでくるみと道人の付き合いが始まっていく。しかし…。 本作品は、鋼鉄天使くるみの好調を受けて制作されたオリジナルの続編として発売されたOVAであるが、2式と異なり前作との関連は明確には語られていない。また、2式がコメディ一色だったことに対し、本作品はシリアスかつ抑揚に欠けたきらいのある室内劇であった。そして、本作品は、登場キャラクターが鋼鉄天使ではないという点で、他の鋼鉄天使シリーズとは大幅に異なっている。 なお、くるみ達の関係も他の鋼鉄天使シリーズとは異なり、共同生活を営む少女達となっている。このため、姉妹というよりはルームメイトの友人という関係という方が適切で、しかもその友人関係もごく普通のものである。例えば、他の2人はくるみの初恋の相手に普通に興味を持ち、その恋の成就を応援するような間柄である。 本作品は、最終的には無印くるみに繋がっていく話であることが示唆され、原作でも作者が言及している。本作品は他の鋼鉄天使シリーズとはキャラクターの姿と名前こそ同じものの、基本的に全くの別物であるといえる。 無印、2式には登場しないエクセリアは後に原作に鋼鉄天使として登場する。
